Alpha Courses
What are They ?
Alpha Courses were devised by Holy Trinity Church Brompton, and have since been adopted by some 1 million churches World wide.
These courses are about the Christian faith, and are attended by folk who are looking towards some spirituality in their lives, as well as for folk who have already taken to Jesus, but want to refresh their knowledge.
What do they cover ?
- Who is Jesus ?
- Why did he die ?
- Why and how do I read the Bible ?
- Who and what is the Holy Spirit ?
- How does God guide us ?
- Does God heal to day ?
- How can I make the most of my life ?
What is the format like ?
The courses are run very informally, and usually start with a simple meal. After which a video on the week's topic is shown.
After the video, you will then be able to discuss the video in small groups over a cup of tea and a biscuit in a relaxed atmoshere.
The course material is not a sermon, but will discusses various aspects about the topic for that week
What will I gain from attending ?
This depends on what you are looking for. The courses are meant to give an insight to the Christain faith. They are not intended to make you attend a church, although many do after the course. What most say how ever,is that after attending their lives were changed.
Folks have found their lives more meaningful, more relaxed, less stressful and now can relate to others in a much easier way.
How much does it cost ?
There is no charge for attending, although a small donation to cover the cost of the supper, would be appreciated.
When and where do they Run ?
A large number of churches now run Alpha, if you know some one from a particular church ask them about Alpha. They will know which local churches participate.
Look out for the Alpha logo, (as at the top heading of this web page), it may be displayed on your local church notice board.
Most Alpha Courses start in the Autumn, at Thornbury URC this will be mid September.
The course is usually preceded by an Alpha Supper Evening. Again these are usually free, and are intended to introduce the course to people who are thinking of trying Alpha. You will have an opportunity of meeting the Course Leadership Team and ask questions about the course. Even if you don't know any one, do try and attend, they are quite friendly with out being over bearing. Many of the people will be in the same strange situation. You are not at a church service but a guest at a supper.
- Details of the next Alpha at Thornbury URC will be posted on our What's On Page
